That’s right, this week we are celebrating INDIE-pendence! The Indelibles have teamed up with other authors to share our favorite indie authors and books with you. This is a really neat way to discover books to add to your pile, and you can check out the full list of participating writers here.
I’ve been reading a lot more books by indie authors lately, largely because it’s so much easier to find them thanks to Amazon and the Kindle. My latest find was through a more old-fashioned approach: a friend recommended Jodi McIsaac’s Through the Door.
Through the Door is McIsaac’s debut novel, and it’s the first in The Thin Veil series. The synopsis from the author:
Celtic mythology and the modern world collide in Through the Door, the first book in the new urban fantasy series The Thin Veil.
Cedar McLeod lives an ordinary but lonely life, raising her six-year-old daughter Eden on her own while trying to balance the demands of her career and the expectations of her mother. Everything seems normal until the day Eden opens her bedroom door and finds herself half a world away – and then goes missing. Suddenly, Cedar realizes her daughter is anything but normal.
In a desperate search for answers, Cedar tries to track down Eden’s father, who mysteriously disappeared from her life before Eden was born. What she discovers is far beyond anything she could have imagined. As she joins unlikely allies in the hunt for her daughter, Cedar finds herself torn between two worlds: the one she thought she knew, and one where ancient myths are real, the stakes are impossibly high, and only the deepest love will survive.
McIsaac weaves a wonderful tale in which our ordinary, modern world provides the setting for extraordinary events right out of Celtic mythology. Her characters are well-defined, and the pacing is pitch-perfect. Great writing and equally great editing add to the allure of Through the Door.
If you’re a fantasy fan, check out Through the Door on Amazon. In the meantime, this indie author has some final touches to put on Ghost of a Hope!
